Scholarships & Awards
UWOFA is pleased to hand out awards to members of the Western community.
Since 1971, we have celebrated students’ academic accomplishments with the Faculty Association scholarships. More recently, we have acknowledged the efforts of our members with awards that recognize particular contributions to the faculty association. These awards were created in memory of individuals who provided exemplary service to UWOFA.
In 2017, we established the Contract Faculty Research and Professional Development Fund, which supports the participation of UWOFA contract faculty members in professional development activities, academic conferences and research.
The following was written in part by Mike Dawes, former chief negotiator for UWOFA and a colleague of Al’s.
Sometimes, we are fortunate enough to meet an individual who changes the way we think about our work and influences our future. Sometimes, a colleague has the intelligence and vision to lead us down new paths. As a mathematician, teacher and leader of the UWO Faculty Association, Allan Heinicke was such a man.
Professor Heinicke enjoyed a diverse and fulfilling academic career beginning with his studies at the University of Manitoba. After he completed his PhD at the University of British Columbia in 1969, he joined the Department of Mathematics at Western. He was named professor emeritus in 2005 after 36 years of distinguished service.

The Tom Murphy Memorial Award for Outstanding Service to UWOFA was established in honour of the late Tom Murphy. Tom was a long-standing contract faculty member in the Department of Sociology who was involved in UWOFA since certification in 1998, serving as a director on the Board for four terms, as a member of the Executive Committee, and as a regular member of the Policy and Governance Committee. Tom also served UWOFA in numerous other ways, most notably as UWOFA’s representative on the Parking Appeals Committee. Perhaps most important, however, Tom was a long-standing member and co-chair of the Committee for Contract Faculty. Tom died on July 18, 2015. This award was established by UWOFA as a lasting tribute to his accomplishments and dedication to UWOFA.

Contract Faculty Research and Professional Development Fund
UWOFA’s Contract Faculty Research and Professional Development Fund was established in 2017. A call for applications goes out each fall.
Purpose
The purpose of this funding is to support the participation of UWOFA contract faculty Members in professional development activities, academic conferences and research.
Amount
UWOFA is to provide up to $10,000 in funding each year, of which $5,000 is available for Limited-Term Members (which includes Members in a Limited-Term Appointment created under Clause 1.1 of the Article Transition Provisions of the 1998-2002 Collective Agreement and Members on a Limited-Term Appointment without a specified end date) and $5,000 is available for Part-Time Members (those holding a Limited-Duties Appointment or a Standing Appointment). However, if the adjudication committee determines that the total of the fundable applications from either the Limited-Term or the Part-Time applicants is less than $5,000 it may allocate the difference to the other group.

The Scholarships being presented have been made possible through the personal contributions of faculty members and Librarians and Archivists at Western. The initiative for these scholarships dates back to 1969, at that time professor Don McCullar from the Faculty of Music began a voluntary drive to raise money for student scholarships. Today, the scholarships are funded from dues collected from members of the faculty and Librarian and Archivists bargaining units. As far as we know UWOFA is one of the only faculty associations in Canada to support students through scholarships.
For decades, UWOFA members have encouraged and recognized our best students in this tangible way. Congratulation to all the students who have demonstrated excellence in their university studies!
